Dr. Bellatorre is a Research Associate with Dr. Dana Dabelea’s team of scholars at the Lifecourse Epidemiology of Adiposity and Diabetes (LEAD) Center at the University of Colorado in the Colorado School of Public Health. Prior to joining the LEAD Center in 2015, Dr. Bellatorre completed an IRTA Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Division of Intramural Research within the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) in Dr. Kelvin Choi’s research lab at the main NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Her doctoral degree is in the field of Medical Sociology with additional training in Survey Research and Methodology from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
Dr. Bellatorre’s work is broadly focused on studying the social determinants of health, health disparities, and the developmental origins of disease with a primary focus on chronic metabolic conditions across the life course including diabetes and associated conditions like obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Her first-authored papers with collaborative teams have appeared in Sleep, Social Science Quarterly, PlosOne, Preventive Medicine, and the Journal of Pediatrics with additional co-authored papers with larger writing groups that have appeared in JAMA, Diabetalogia, and the Lancet, among others.
In addition to her scholarly work, Dr. Bellatorre also serves as the study coordinator for several LEAD Center diabetes studies including the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study’s Colorado and Navajo Nation sites, the SEARCH Food Security Cohort Study, and the Diabetes in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults (DiCAYA) Component A and B studies.
