Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State as Initial Presentation of Type 1 Diabetes in Children
This Medfyle was published more than two years ago. More recent Medfyle on this topic may now be available.
Key messages
- Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) continues to be a challenging diagnosis in the pediatric population due to its low frequency compared with Diabetic Ketoacidosis, especially when presenting at a very young age.
- Appropriate fluid administration with delay in insulin administration are key in the management of HHS.
- The awareness of this possible presentation and the early recognition of HHS with appropriate fluid management are needed to improve patients' outcomes.
