Key messages
- The diagnostic method for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is still debated between the One-Step and Two-Step Method.
- When comparing two similar Canadian populations, using the one-step method vs the two-step method resulted in a 15% prevalence increase.
- The two-step method (more liberal diagnostic cut-offs values) vs the one-step method (with stricter diagnostic values) resulted in an increased rate of large for gestational age neonates, neonatal hypoglycemia, gestational hypertension and neonatal intensive care unit admissions.
- Future directions will include cost analysis of increased prevalence in light of decreased complications and hopefully a unique worldwide diagnostic method.
