Key messages

  • Acute hyperglycemia in vitro induces monocyte cholesterol uptake promoting foam cell formation
  • This is a potential mechanism by which acute hyperglycemia potentiates CVD by activating monocytes and enhancing its cholesterol content.
  • We postulate that these monocytes loaded with cholesterol are then capable of carrying this cholesterol to plaques and contribute to nascent plaque formation.
